Thieves

Austin, TX

There are hundreds of bands that play pop-punk with the same urgency and heart-on-sleeve romanticism as Thieves, but there’s an anthemic sweep to the Austin band’s melodic thrashings that lifts it above the faceless hordes singing in the same pinched, nasally tones. Thieves’ dense, speedy songs deftly marry surging hardcore beats with a keen pop sense, providing enough technical chops and turn-on-a-dime breakdowns to satisfy fans of heavier fare. Songs like ‘Slo-Motion’ and ‘Second Star To The Right’ might suffer from an overabundance of ideas, but in a stagnant sea of sound-alikes, that’s not such a bad thing." That is how The AV Club (avclub.com) described the Austin qaurtet and the band members themselves don’t have much of an argument. Thieves came to life after a couple of other local bands broke up. Four of the members of these bands were listening to music together one night when they decided that they wanted to play the type of music that got them playing music in the first place. They wanted to play music that was carefree and a lot of fun. Some of the the bands mentioned may have been Blink 182, New Found Glory, The Starting Line, Every Time I Die, The Bled, At All Cost, Hit The Lights, Thrice, and Recover…but who can really say?
The band’s live performance is what really defines them. They bring their energy level to the point of borderline recklessness. Their followers behave no differently, often hurling themselves off the stage or pulling the microphone from its stand to sing the songs themselves. Somehow in their two years of existence, the band has managed to play sold out shows at some crucial austin venues including Emo’s and The Mohawk. They regularly headline weekend shows at Red 7, Emo’s, and The Mohawk and have played with many national acts at these venues including: The Voodoo Glow Skulls, Hit The Lights, The Bled, Hawthorne Heights, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, From First To Last, Authority Zero, Rufio, Just Surrender, The Wonder Years, LAX, Holy Fuck!, Man Overboard, Transit, Pompeii, Cruiserweight, and Fireworks.
Amongst countless shows in their hometown and all over Texas, the band has managed to make their way through the southeastern United States several times in their short existence alongside pop punk acts, Carridale and With The Punches. The band were devising a plan to release their debut in early 2010 when they met Cory and Ricky from The Vagabond Collective. The Vagabond Collective is a promotions company in Austin, TX that regularly throws sold out shows including their recent “Wild Frontier Fest” on both of The Mohawk’s stages in September. They began booking Thieves and after a short while, the two parties decided to make a record together. The Vagabond Collective released the debut, “Just Give It Up” on May 13th, 2011.
The band is currently embarking on a five week tour of the east coast and southern United States. They plan releasing a new EP in the fall and touring the West Coast in the winter to promote it. They hope to release their sophomore full length and tour as much as possible in 2012.
