Mayor to Captain Tug-o-War Team in Nod to Aqua Fest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 16, 2012

Mayor’s Team to be made up of Rollergirls

AUSTIN, TX – Mayor Lee Leffingwell is participating in Fun Fun Fun Fest’s 2nd Annual Aqua Olympics this weekend by leading a tug-o-war team in an epic South Austin v. North Austin battle across Lady Bird Lake. The Mayor, who grew up in the Bouldin neighborhood, will captain the South Austin Team, while Council Member Mike Martinez will lead the North Austin Team. The event is this Sunday, Aug. 19, at Fiesta Gardens, with opening ceremonies starting at 4pm and the tug-o-war starting just after 6pm.

When Mayor Leffingwell heard about this event, he decided to invite the Texas Rollergirls to be on his team. They accepted the challenge and all four teams in the league will be represented: Hell Marys, Hotrod Honeys, Honky Tonk Heartbreakers, and Hustlers.

“The Rollergirls and I fear nobody and look forward to winning this tug-o-war contest by dragging Team Martinez into the drink,” said Mayor MayNot (Leffingwell’s given Derby name). “South Austin will rise again.”

Though the Fun Fun Fun Music Festival doesn’t happen until November, organizers started the Aqua Olympics last year in a nod to Aqua Fest, an Austin tradition that lasted for decades from 1962-1998. The Aqua Olympics, like Aqua Fest, will feature various water challenges and activities, food and drinks, prizes and of course, live music. The tug-o-war across the lake was a legendary event during the years of Aqua Fest and will be brought back this year.

Formed in 2003 as the only sports league of its kind, Texas Rollergirls started today's Flat Track Derby movement. There are now more than 400 Flat Track Derby leagues worldwide, with more forming every week. In its current incarnation, Roller Derby is an athletic competition complete with well-defined rules, divisions, tournaments, and a governing body: the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).
