emptying my head out on a wednesday morning

i'm pretty hungover this morning, so i'm gonna sit here and type, instead of the work thing i'm getting paid for. errrrrr here's what's on my cloudy mind this morning:

dick dale

dude, so did you know dick dale was still like, alive and playing? i had no idea, til i was seeing a friend's band last friday, and saw the flyer on the wall at red eyed fly. it's the king of surf guitar, how could i not? (full disclosure: if this was 10 years ago, i woulda saw weezer last night. but no thanks.) he's still got it. he played all those songs we know, but don't know the names to (misirlou, pipeline, let's go trippin, etc), and there were some fun singalongs, too. the dude's playing is so unique, it's cool to watch. he plays left-handed, but doesn't re-string his guitar, he just plays it upside down. and sometimes, he puts his fingers over the top of the fret, instead of from underneath, like normal. never seen anyone do that before. so yeah, he played over 90 minutes, and it was super awesome. 60's dance party and everything. i tell you what, though: no matter how many weeknight shows you go to, the next morning NEVER GETS EASIER : /

speaking of concerts, is it just me, or has it been a slow concert summer so far in austin? there really just has not been a whole lot to get excited about. in fact, i don't even think i have tickets to anything until aclfest right now, that's sad. i wish i had more friends that would ask me to come to shows with them, i'd prolly go. i think i'm the only big concert-goer in my circle of friends. weird... maybe i need more like-minded friends.

bass drum of death

been listening to a lot of them this week. i first heard of them through someone i knew, cause they were playing psychfest. they were the last band we saw that night, and it was such a great way to end it, they were the best. i love when two ppl can make such a heavy sound like that. we were jumping up and down, dancing, girls were getting topless in the front row- they rocked our faces off. i got ahold of the album soon after that, and it's top 10 of the year so far, forrrrrrrrr suuuurrrrrrrrrrre. and luckily, they're coming back to austin pretty soon- twice! 9/8, they'll be opening for japandroids at the mohawk. i don't think tix are on sale for that yet. then they'll be back at the mohawk 10/8, opening for toro y meh. got those tix already :) i guess the only bad part about that, is it's less likely they play funfest. i still hope they do, though! highly recommend you checking them out if they come to your town.

a couple good bass drum of death songs

I'm sooooo sad I missed Dick Dale last night. I really wanted to go but had school til 9:30 & was already exhausted. I agree about the lack of good shows lately/coming up soon. I went to several GREAT shows the first few months of the year, but it seems to have slowed down more as summer approaches.

Tonight I'll be at Headhunters for open mic night. My oldest son will be playing. He's pretty damn good (& I don't just say that as his mother) & hasn't played in Austin in awhile. I say everyone should come down & check him out! ;-)

damn, Dick Dale that is awesome! I thank the film Pulp Fiction for introducing me to DD many many years ago. Good to know he's still alive and jammin.
