I'm very confused with the whole points system on this website. Can anyone help me?

I understand that different things you do will get you awarded points, and that different actions have different point values. That's logical enough.

What I don't get is what those points are good for. Can I redeem them for anything? Do I get a fancy prize when I hit a certain number of points? What's the deal?
