Austin Live Music Mingle
This year I've gotten more active with fellow FFFgoers...reading their blogs, posting comments, etc. I already noticed that a couple of people are looking for people to go with to the festival. For about 4 years I had such a dilemma for pretty much all the shows I went to...going by myself to most of them. Just wanted to share with the FFF community that there is a meetup group called "Austin Live Music Mingle" within the meetup.com website.
The way the group works is as follows: people post ideas (i.e. shows they are interested in attending) and once we get 3 or more members who voted liking your idea we convert it into a meetup. This means that we will set a place to meet before the show for drinks, etc and then go together to the show. There are members with all sorts of taste in music, so there is always a show for everyone. If any of you are interested, you can sign up for the group here:

Stephen, is not free but you could start your own group in meetup.com. I don't remember how our organizer pays (we are looking to get sponsors), but the meetup.com website is open to all US...here is Austin there is even a meetup group about Lord of the Ring. LMAO!!!
inkboy200x, I feel you. It sucks having to do a road trip to see shows. Like even here some bands would skip Austin and only go to Dallas/Houston. Coming from Puerto Rico, I don't drive more than 3 hours...specially during weekdays hehehe
