Random Austin Fact #105
On August 1, 1966, the day Charles Whitman made his name infamous for the shooting rampage centered atop the University of Texas tower, Austin did not have a government-run ambulance service, rather ambulances were run by the local funeral homes. Additionally, this tragic event was a major catalyst in the creation of SWAT teams in cities around the country.
