SPI Seafood & Music Festival
Just got back from a fun and tiring weekend at South Padre Island for the Seafood & Music Festival. I went in early on Thursday since I would be volunteering early Friday morning. I went to the festival pre-party at Padre Rock, which featured One Eyed Doll, an amazing hard rock duo from Austin. Singer/guitarist Kimberly Freeman puts on a hell of a show, to the point where I wonder why FFF didn't recruit them. I helped the band load up their gear after the show--both of them are really nice (and supremely entertaining).
On Friday, I volunteered for 12 hours doing just about everything you could imagine: setting up tents, tables, and fencing; helping a vendor unload their equipment and set up their booth, to helping direct people where to go and keep the lines moving. I enjoyed working with the other volunteers and the staff as well. After a whole day working in the sun, I wasn't up for attending the festival Friday night. Instead, my friends who had come in for the festival and I made our requisite stop at the Coral Reef Lounge for karaoke.
On Saturday I was able to enjoy the festival as an attendee, and I was glad to see a fairly decent crowd even in the hot mid-day sun. My friends were stoked for Billy Joe Shaver, who was great. Later that night we saw Ryan Bingham, who plays Texas country in the vain of the Drive-By Truckers, and drew a big crowd as well.
Interspersed throughout the weekend were stops at the beach, great food at the Brew Co. and Parrot Eyes, and far too much drinking.
Then, to top off a great weekend, the Jets beat the Patriots for the first time in forever! Too much fun. Now I'm even more excited about FFF!
