7 tips for good behavior, circa 1500 C.E.
Desiderius Erasmus was a Dutch Renaissance humanist, Catholic priest, social critic, teacher, and theologian. According to Erasmus, if you wished to promote good social interaction, you should not:
1. Gossip
2. Tell unkind stories
3. Boast
4. Indulge in self-display
5. Seek to defeat others in argument
6. Interrupt people when they tell a story
7. Be too inquisitive
Well, I can now see why I am a bit of a social leper. On the upside, no one has ever accused me of being too inquisitive. On a final note, I think we should add one more rule, "Don't eat your friend's face."

Guidelines are for architects. As for your Conan vs Fabio argument, I am more of a freelance thief/mercenary like Zula (see Conan the Destroyer). Thieving good bits here and there from all like a scavenger, yet always loyal to the end and looking good in leather straps.
Oh and also I hate rats.

@trickydick: I see these as more soft guidelines than steadfast rules. The way I see it, your viewpoint depends on whether you are the spiritual Mongol warrior or Conan the Barbarian (RE: 1982 Conan the Barbarian movie). You are either the "...open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair" guy or you prefer to "...crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women." I say, follow your bliss, and if that leads to stealing treasure and killing a giant snake, so be it.

I'd have to disagree with you on #5. Just because.

Pretty good rules to live by, as a matter of fact! "Don't eat your friend's face" should definitely be the 8th rule, however.
